Episode 5: Tobacco River, Part 2

Ep. 5-

In Part 2, we dive back into the surprisingly dramatic world of freshwater mussels. Last time, we shared how a tiny, federally protected species managed to stall the reconstruction of a broken dam and spark a political showdown between environmental agencies, local government, and residents.

This episode picks up where we left off—boots in the water and hands in the mud. Along the way, we uncover even more of the river’s hidden residents: native freshwater mussels and crayfish skittering beneath rocks. With help from local naturalists, we track down a collection of mussel specimens to get a closer look at the elusive snuffbox mussel.

This episode has the science, the discoveries, the conflict—and, of course, our signature dose of river chaos. Come along as the story of mussels, policy, and people keeps unfolding beneath the current.
